Vitamins support brain health in seniors, study finds

Some people treat their advancing age as an excuse to eat whatever they want and not worry as much about nutrition. However, new research suggests that this may be a mistake, as a proper diet is one of the most effective ways to support brain health in old age.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Oregon Health and Science University. The team found that seniors who consumed more vitamins B, C, D and E showed signs of stronger brain health, according to HealthDay New. High levels of omega-3 consumption also entailed benefit.

The researchers said that these nutrients appear to work in conjunction with each other, as those who had higher levels of just a couple did not appear to experience the same benefits.

"For people with a vitamin profile high in B, C, D, E, those particular nutrients seem to be working together on some level," lead researcher Gene Bowman told the news source.

In order to get adequate levels of these vitamins, seniors may want to consider taking nutritional supplements. The Cleveland Clinic reports that about a third of all elderly individuals have a nutritional deficiency.
