Some nutrients need to be supplemented more than others

Taking a general multivitamin can play an important role in supporting many areas of health, but individuals may still have deficiencies of certain nutrients if this is all they take, as many people already have extremely low levels of a number of key vitamins, experts say.

Dr. Tanya Edwards of the Cleveland Clinic told Fox News that many people get insufficient levels of vitamin D, magnesium and omega-3s. Therefore, taking extra care to increase levels of these nutrients beyond just taking a multivitamin may be important for good overall health.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common these days, as many people are aware, but Edwards told the news source that fewer individuals recognize the fact that they have low levels of magnesium. This nutrient is critical to getting a proper night's sleep. Deficiencies can lead to insomnia and other sleep related problems.

Furthermore, omega-3s play a central role in brain health and heart health, yet many people do not consume adequate quantities. The American Heart Association recommends that individuals consume at least two servings of fatty fish each week. Short of this, individuals can boost their intake of omega-3s by taking nutritional supplements.
