Some foods contribute to healthy smile

While many people invest significant amounts of money on fancy tooth-whitening products and other extras to help improve their smile, there is a much simpler solution. Experts say that simply including more vitamin-rich foods in a daily diet may provide support for a healthy mouth.

Dentist Michael Kosdon told CBS News that certain foods have nutrients in them that may act like a natural toothbrush, scrubbing the teeth of potentially harmful particles. Strawberries and cauliflower are particularly useful, as they have natural acids that scrub the exterior of teeth.

Other vitamin-rich foods that are good for the teeth include oranges and pineapples, Kosdon told the news source. These citrus fruits are known to increase saliva production, which can kill bacteria and support a healthy smile.

It may also be possible to support healthy teeth from the inside out. Teeth are essentially extensions of the skeletal system, so nutrients that are good for the bones are also beneficial to the teeth. Dairy products that contain high levels of calcium can keep teeth strong. Milk, yogurt and broccoli are among the most calcium-rich foods.
