Seniors are advised to be on the lookout for vitamin-rich foods

One of the most important aspects of healthy aging is maintaining vision. Many seniors report the loss of sight as a major disruption to their quality of life. This can keep them from visiting friends and family and prevent them from doing the types of activities they normally enjoy.

Fortunately, there are several vitamins and minerals that can support healthy vision into old age. A 2006 study from the National Eye Institute, a branch of the National Institutes of Health, found that a formulation of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, zinc and copper was effective at supporting sight.

The researchers said that their findings present a potentially better way to preserve vision as individuals get old. Much research has focused on different surgical or pharmaceutical interventions to stop the loss of sight. However, taking a natural supplement could be much simpler than either of these methods.

Many of the factors that determine whether or not a person will lose their vision are genetic and cannot be muted. However, this only makes the need for proper nutrition more important for susceptible individuals, as vitamins and antioxidants may forestall age-related sight problems.
