Many people begin to experience vision problems as they age and simply accept these deficiencies as a normal part of growing older. However, experts say that proper nutrition and getting plenty of vitamins and minerals can support healthy eyesight for many years to come.
Dr. David Benderson of the Maryland Eye Associates recently wrote in the Annapolis Capital that studies have shown several vitamins and minerals to be involved in supporting healthy vision. He said that vitamins A, C and E as well as zinc and copper have all shown promise.
Vitamin A in particular may be a good source of support for eyesight. This is the nutrient in carrots that gives the vegetable its distinctive color and has earned it praise for its ability to support the eyes. Vitamin A is made up of metabolites called carotenoids that have powerful antioxidant properties.
While consuming a diet rich in these nutrients may not be the only factor in determining vision health, it is a good place to start. Eating more foods that contain the vitamins and minerals or taking nutritional supplements may be a good way for individuals to support healthy eyesight as they grow older.
