Omega-3 fatty acids may play an important role in men's health and sexual function, according to a new study published in the journal Biology of Reproduction. Taking supplements may be an effective, proactive way to reduce the risk of problems in this aspect of health.
The researchers who conducted the study said that it has long been recognized that there are high levels of omega-3s in men's sexual organs. However, experts were not quite sure why this would be. The current study revealed that omega-3s, in particular DHA, are involved in key activities of sperm cells.
Findings from the investigation may explain the mystery of why there are high levels of omega-3s in male sexual organs and point the way to methods for supporting sexual health in men, the researchers said.
Individuals can find high levels of omega-3s in seafood like salmon or tuna. In fact, in order to maintain adequate levels of the nutrients, the American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of oil fish per week. However, for individuals who do not like fish, omega-3 supplements may provide a viable alternative.
