Omega-3s shown to support immune health

A group of researchers from Ohio State University is recommending that people get more omega-3 fatty acids in their diet, as a recent study conducted by the team showed that the nutrient plays an important role in supporting immune health.

The researchers tested the effects of omega-3 supplementation in a group of medical students at the school. This population has been shown in previous investigations to have compromised immune systems as a result of chronic stress.

After administering omega-3 supplements to these individuals, the researchers noted that the participants had lower levels of cytokines in their blood. These molecules have a dual nature and can be either beneficial or harmful. They are a part of the immune system and destroy invading viruses and bacteria.

However, they also cause inflammation at higher levels, which can lead to disease. Omega-3s appear to play an important role in regulating these molecules, particularly in stressed or anxious individuals.

The researchers recommended that individuals make efforts to increase their daily intake of this important nutrient, which may support immune health.
