Omega-3s key to maintaining joint health

Omega-3s key to maintaining joint health

Many people begin to experience joint health problems as they grow older. This condition is extremely common among seniors. However, older individuals may be able to support their joint by taking omega-3 supplements.

Food Consumer reports that three separate studies since 2005 have shown substantial joint health benefits to omega-3 supplementation. These investigations generally suggested that omega-3s may play a role in regulating inflammation throughout the body, which may be important to joint health issues.

Where you get your omega-3 matters. The news source points out that certain sources may have added health benefits. For example, krill oil, in addition to being an excellent source of omega-3s, also has high levels of the antioxidant astaxanthin, which has been shown to have numerous heart health benefits.

In order to consume adequate levels of omega-3s, the American Heart Association recommends at least two servings of oily fish per week. For those who are not fans of seafood, omega-3 supplements may also do the trick. Maintaining high levels of omega-3s may help older individuals support their joint health.
