Omega-3s are key to brain health during winter months

The long cold months of winter can take their toll on a person's mood. Day after day of little sun exposure had been known to make people feel less positive than they would under normal circumstances. However, individuals may be able to address these issues by getting more of certain nutrients in their diet.

For example, registered dietitian Tanya Zuckerbrot recently wrote on the website of Fox News that omega-3s have been shown to support brain health. This may contribute to a stabilized mood during the winter months.

One of the best sources of omega-3s is oily fish. Tuna and salmon are loaded with these nutrients. Zuckerbrot points out that omega-3s make up about 8 percent of the brain's volume, which underscores the important role they play in the mind.

The American Heart Association recommends that individuals consume about two servings of fish per week in order to ensure they are consuming enough omega-3s. Additionally, individuals can maintain adequate levels by taking nutritional supplements. Doing so may help people support a healthy mood throughout the long, cold days of winter.
