Red wine has high levels of an antioxidant known as resveratrol, which has been shown to support heart health. It also has plenty of alcohol, which has similarly been linked to cardiovascular benefits. So which is most responsible for the positive heart health effects of wine?
A new study suggests the answer may be both. A team of Spanish researchers asked groups of participants to drink either red wine, gin or dealcoholized red wine for a one-month period. The results showed that either beverage supported heart health during this period, though they had slightly different modes of operations.
The findings suggested that the various components of red wine may each have a role to play in supporting cardiovascular function. Therefore, drinking red win in moderation may deliver numerous heart health benefits.
Still, many people do not like wine or are unable to drink alcohol. These individuals may still be able to get many of the same heart health benefits associated with red wine simply by taking nutritional supplements containing resveratrol. The new study is simply the latest to associate it with powerful heart health benefits.
