New study confirms brain health benefits of vitamin supplements

Taking a daily multivitamin may have a range of positive health effects, not the least of which are benefits for brain health. Many people who take nutritional aids on a regular basis report feeling stronger mentally. A recent study from a team of Australian researchers found significant evidence to support these benefits.

The team followed a group of men as they were given either a placebo or active vitamin and antioxidant supplements. The results showed that those who were given the actual nutritional supplements experienced brain health benefit and developed a better general sense of well-being, compared to those in the placebo group.

"In the present study, there were no changes in the placebo group, signifying a real effect of multivitamin supplementation," the Swinburne University of Technology researchers wrote in their report, which was published in the Journal of Human Psychopharmacology.

They added that the benefits of vitamin supplementation may be particularly important for older individuals, who are more susceptible to brain health maladies. Vitamin supplements may provide them with the neurological support they need to maintain strong health through their senior years.
