Multivitamins may simplify search for nutritional supplements

Some people wonder which vitamins are right for them. Vitamin D has been shown to provide support for immune health while omega-3s are thought to benefit the heart. Deciding which supplements to take can be a difficult task.

The answer may simply be to use a standard multivitamin. Evidence suggests that some nutrients work in conjunction with one another, and separating them may diminish their effectiveness.

For example, vitamin A has been shown to support healthy vision and is recommended by many doctors. However, a new study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology indicates that the nutrient is more effective when a person eats more oily fish, which is generally an excellent source of omega-3s. Consuming one nutrient without the other may have little impact.

The findings underscore the importance of eating a well-balanced diet and taking multivitamins that contain a number of key nutrients. While certain individuals may have different nutritional needs based on their age and gender, most people require fundamental amounts of the same vitamins and minerals. Just about everyone could benefit from a standard multivitamin.
