In recent years, numerous studies have shown that vitamin D plays an important role in supporting a number of different areas of health. Now, one doctor is telling businesses they can save a significant amount of money by encouraging workers to boost their vitamin D levels.
Dr. Greg Plotnikoff is getting set to publish a new paper in which he argues that companies may be able to reduce their healthcare costs by using vitamin D to support the health of workers rather than treating them when they get sick, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribute.
He told the news source that many people experience poor health and that this may not force them to seek medical attention, but it does reduce their productivity. This can cost companies tremendously.
Meanwhile, interventions to boost the vitamin D levels of workers may represent an insignificant cost for most businesses. Given the numerous health benefits of the nutrient, this may be one of the best ways for companies to support the well-being of their workers.
Such an intervention may be necessary. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that up to one-third of U.S. adults have low levels of vitamin D.
