Dietary changes may help individuals support immune health during the winter

With winter upon residents of the northern hemisphere, experts are urging individuals to take steps to support their immune health. Simply doing the same things they did during the summer months may not be enough to keep their health at its peak.

The immune system faces far more attacks during the winter months, which means that it needs to be functioning at its highest levels. In order to achieve this, individuals need to increase their intake of critical vitamins and minerals.

Lydia Korr, a registered dietitian with the Florida Department of Citrus, said that vitamin C plays a particularly important role in supporting immune health and addressing some of the other common health concerns that come along with winter weather.

"A nutritious diet plays an integral role in supporting both physical and mental well-being," says Knorr. "Simply increasing one's intake of fresh, in-season fruit can alleviate feelings of lethargy during the winter months and provide a natural boost in energy while delivering essential nutrients like vitamin C."

Additionally, a good multivitamin may help individuals enhance their intake of key vitamins and antioxidants that may support their immune health throughout the winter.
