Vitamin D may be among the most important nutrients for women's health. It is widely recognized as playing an important role in supporting healthy bone and joint function and new evidence indicates it may be a powerful nutrient for boosting other areas of well-being.
A team of researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found that mega-doses of vitamin D appear to be effective in supporting a woman's health while she is menstruating.
The scientists tested the effectiveness of a 300,000 international-unit dose of vitamin D, which is much higher than the normal daily recommended allowance of the nutrient. They found it to be effective for the purposes of the study without raising the risk of any side effects.
The researchers said their study is among the first to make this type of finding, so they would like to see the results confirmed by other clinical trials before they start recommending this type of extremely high dose of vitamin D to women. However, the findings do point to a potentially promising method for supporting women's health.
