Vitamin D supplementation has long been known to play an important role in supporting bone and joint health, particularly when taken with calcium. Now, a new study offers some of the most definitive proof of this benefit.
A team of researchers from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force analyzed the results of nearly 50 studies previously conducted to investigate the health benefits of vitamin D and calcium supplementation. The results showed that those who consumed higher levels of these nutrients were able to maintain much better bone and joint health.
The findings were unable to determine the exact optimal dose needed. However, in some cases, the results showed that higher levels than currently recommended benefited participants.
Researchers concluded that more research still must be conducted to determine the proper doses of vitamin D and calcium needed to maintain proper bone and joint health. However, it is safe to say that many people may benefit from consuming higher levels of the nutrients, especially seniors who are at the highest risk of experiencing bone and joint health problems.
