Antioxidant in apples provides strong digestive health support

Apples are very rich in antioxidants known as polyphenols, and these nutrients may provide significant digestive health support, according to a new study out of Montana State University.

The researchers said there is apparently a good deal of truth to the old saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." Their results showed that the polyphenols in apples have powerful anti-inflammatory effects. These are particularly important for supporting digestive health.

"It appears that the old adage rings true in more ways than one," said John Wherry, deputy editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, which published the study. "In addition to the obvious health benefits of the nutrients and fiber in fruits and vegetables, this study indicates that even something as relatively common as the apple contains other healthy ingredients."

The researchers who led the investigation said their findings could have implications for a wide number of health concerns. Individuals who worry about their digestive health may have the most to gain from the findings of the present study, as the results indicate the possibility of achieving strong support by eating more apples.
